Forgiving Yourself: The First Step to a Fresh Start

As moms, we carry so much on our shoulders. Work, kids, school schedules, sports, appointments… the list never ends. And if you live with ADHD (or have kids who do), keeping your home organized can feel almost impossible. This week is Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. It’s often called the Day of Atonement — a time for reflection, forgiveness, and starting fresh. Even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, the message behind it is one we can all relate to: letting go of guilt and stepping into a clean slate.

And for many moms I work with, the hardest person to forgive is often yourself.

Letting go of guilt and stepping into a clean slate

Why Forgiveness Matters for ADHD Moms

When I meet moms here in Orange County, they’re not just looking for “organization.” They want relief. Relief from:- The constant clutter that builds up in kitchens, playrooms, and garages. The guilt of not being able to maintain “perfect” systems that don’t work for their lifestyle. The stress that spills into family life, creating tension with their partner or kids.

What they truly want is a home that feels supportive, functional, and calm — without the shame or overwhelm.

Forgiveness Is the First Step to Change

Forgiving yourself doesn’t mean ignoring the piles of laundry or messy garage. It means letting go of the guilt that says you “should” have figured it out by now.

The truth is, you don’t need to work harder — you need systems that actually work for your family.

Just like Yom Kippur encourages reflection and renewal, you can use this moment as a reminder that your past attempts don’t define you. You can start again, and this time, it can feel different.

A Fresh Start for Your Home

Here are three ways to embrace the spirit of forgiveness this week:

1. Start small. Pick one high-traffic space — a pantry shelf, an entryway drop zone — and

give yourself a clean slate.

2. Ditch the guilt. Your home doesn’t need to look Pinterest-perfect. It just needs to

function in a way that supports your life.

3. Build lasting systems. ADHD-friendly solutions are simple, repeatable, and designed for

real families — not magazine photos.
